Intrusion Alarm System

Can you install an alarm system in a house you are renting? ?

Getting ready to move; would like to install an alarm system or maybe an intrusion alarm to the home. Will be leasing for 1 yr(possibly longer)–is the installation completely up to the owner. I mean upon my departure from the property, they could always keep it & lease with a higher asking price right?
