Audio Surveillance Tips – Know The Risks
Audio surveillance can be a great tool for people in the private investigation business, or for people looking to enhance their Surveillance System for further asset protection. However it is important to know the risks and legality behind using it.
State, County, & City Regulations
The first thing to note before considering installing and or using audio surveillance in your home or business or wherever is the laws concerning its use. States, counties, and cities can all have their own specific regulations that have to be followed when using audio listening devices and recording audio in particular places. These laws can change dramatically from region to region so it is very important to know the laws in your area and wherever else you may be using the equipment.
Example
For example in some areas all that is necessary for audio surveillance to be allowed is to give notice that audio is being recorded; be it verbally or with a sign in plain sight indicating the use of audio recording equipment. In other areas however to record audio you may have to have a signed document indicating the person being recorded has given their consent.
A good majority of people have probably heard the line “We may record this conversation for quality control” when they are on the line with a tech help desk or something of that nature involving customer support. This is another example of how audio recording devices can be used after they have given prior warning.
Public vs. Private
There are some areas such as public places where audio recording may be completely off limits or they may have a ban on covert audio recording. Furthermore some areas may also allow the use of covert Video Surveillance, but at the same time not allow covert audio recording. This makes it very important to make sure that you know the difference between a public and private areas legal procedures concerning audio surveillance.
Now the need to know these laws and regulations shouldn’t deter people from purchasing or using audio surveillance equipment. It should simply serve as a warning and guide to make sure people use it properly and don’t have to face legal hassles down the road.
Ultimately when purchasing audio surveillance equipment it is a wise choice to have a good idea of what the uses of the audio equipment will be, and then to check out your local and regional laws regarding the topic, and make sure you are not in violation of those laws. As long as you have gone through this checklist beforehand you can then rest easy in knowing that your use of audio equipment is legal and will be able to be used in the way you need it to be.
